Tech Corner Post: Pinterest

Written by Mary Barnett

For my technology corner post I chose to do Pinterest. I have been a fan of Pinterest for a while now but recently with using it more for this project I realized just how efficient the website is. Pinterest is described as a virtual pinboard. It lets users organize and share all different things one can find on the web. People can use Pinterest for many occasions and reasons from planning a wedding or decorating their homes to even just organizing recipes. Another awesome feature of Pinterest is that you can browse pinboards made by other people and share interests or get inspiration from people who share commonalities with you. Pinterest also has a mission to connect everyone in the world though the ‘things’ they find interesting. Pinterest connects people based on tastes and interests.
Pinterest can be used in mass communications in many ways. I never realized this until I needed to think about it for this paper. I use to just think it was a fun way to categorize and organize things I like (which it is) but it can also be used by people in the mass communications field. I want to be an event planner and one of the top questions I get is if I want to be a wedding planner. Although I am not sure if that’s what I want to do I have researched it and after comparing it to Pinterest I realized that if I was a wedding planner I could use this site to display all my work and weddings I had done. All you do in Pinterest is type in wedding or any term relating in the search bar and so many pictures pop up of different ideas. If a bride to be saw things that I as the wedding planner had done she could then click the picture to further find my information to hire me. It’s a great way to PR your business and work you can do or products you can make. Another example, even if you were a PR representative for a clothing company like Ann Taylor Loft this site is so beneficial. I have found myself typing in ‘cute outfit’, then seeing a photo of an outfit I really like and clicking it which then gives me the site at which it’s from and that day I ended up spending about $150 dollars on clothes from that site without even realizing it. It’s such a fun and new way to get your business out there for people to see and even share with their friends which then broadens your fan base more then you could imagine. Anytime your business may be trying to sell something it could easily be displayed through Pinterest and shared with people and buyers all over the world.
