Technology Corner Post: Skype
Skype is a technological tool that allows people to communicate from every corner of the globe in an instant. It provides several ways for people to connect, such as phone calls, instant message, or video chat. Skype is free to video chat or instant message; however, people can pay a small fee to send texts, access WiFi, or connect via telephone; including landlines and mobile numbers. Skype can be downloaded onto one’s computer, phone, and now it can be accessed through the television. Not only is Skype great for personal use, but it is also a useful tool for businesses because people no longer have to be in the same place at the same time to attend meetings, events, presentations, interviews, etc. Busy schedules can make it hard for planning and cooperation; however, with Skype, business partners and employees can all attend the same important functions without physical presence. Also, with the feature, group video calling, conference calls are made easier as well. Skype also has a version called Skype Business, which claims it can “help businesses whatever their size”. From small businesses to large enterprises, Skype explains the benefits their product has on corporations, such as saving money, time, providing closer relationships, boosting productivity, and providing flexibility.
As of January 2012, the total number of Skype users was at 31 million. The percentage of small businesses that used Skype as primary communication service was at 35%. Although Skype plays an important role in the business world, which can be seen through statistics and through their business specific products, the other percentage of users utilize Skype in other interesting ways. For example, Skype has played a large part in the military.  It is the main tool used by soldiers to keep in touch with family members and friends back home. Also, Skype has been used for broadcasting events, such as weddings Whatever one’s purpose for using Skype, whether for business, connecting with family, or sharing memories, it is a convenient piece of technology that adapts to anyone and strives to be user friendly.
