Tech Corner Post: Twitter

Written by Nichole Houston

In March of 2006 one of the greatest social media forums, was created.
Twitter, which is defined as an online social networking service and microblogging service, that allows people to broadcast short messages. These short messages, called “tweets”, are limited to 140 characters in length, and are often about what someone is doing, where they are, what they are thinking or reading, and so on. Including links to web pages, images, and other forms of media are other options of what one can include in a “tweet.”
Twitter user’s can benefit gratefully from its number of
features. As a Twitter user, one select which other people they would like to follow, when you choose to follow someone you are able to see their tweets which will show up in your twitter stream. But it is not necessary to follow everyone who follows you, and not everyone you choose to follow will follow you back either. Twitter also offers privacy features such as direct messages, known as “DM” which is just like emails which are only visible by the individual user, not their followers. There are also privacy settings for your “tweets” which you can configure in your account privacy settings, making your “tweets” only visible to those whom you accept. Twitter offers a number of excellent features that all types of user’s can benefit from, especially Public Relations professionals as well as the organizations they work for.
This site’s effectiveness for organizations grows as the number of followers increases and there is a steady stream of messages being sent. Organizations can find out what people are saying about their experiences related to the organization by following mentions and hashtags. For example, a local organization,
Habitat Milledgeville uses their Twitter to keep followers informed about upcoming events as well as ways to get involved within the local community by posting links to their Facebook page and using hashtags to talk about their new store hours. Another company that actively uses Twitter as a quick and effective way to communicate up-to-the minute news is Starbucks. Starbucks uses twitter for all types of things, they keep their followers informed about new and improved coffee flavors or drinks items on their menu. The company also actively uses the mention and hashtag feature to engage in twitter conversations, and to keep up with what people are saying about their products. Last but not least, they also provide followers with links to their website, articles, recipes, or health and wellness facts about their products.
Twitter has so many different things to offer an organization or company, and I can talk about them all day but the most important reasons why many people do use Twitter is to stay connected,  and to broaden the way companies market to their target audience. The best thing about this form of social media is how instant it is, how instant one can connect with its followers, and I think that’s ultimately most organizations main goals when reaching out to their  audiences.
