Tech Corner Post: QR Codes

QR Codes

Quick response codes, more commonly referred to as QR codes, are beginning to be an innovative piece of technology in the social media world. If a person has a QR scanner app on any of his or her devices he or she can simply scan the QR code and it will link him or her directly to the web page. Some QR code scanners can also save previously scanned codes that way you never lose the information!

QR codes are not only simple to use but they are truly efficient. The creators of the QR code can link you to an important part of their website so that it makes it easier for the consumer. Another aspect of QR codes is they can be placed anywhere. Some companies are beginning to put QR codes on their websites that directly link to Facebook and Twitter pages, which eliminates the tireless searching, thus driving more traffic to the companies' social media. The interesting aspect of QR codes is that they are simple to make, due to QR code generators which allow anyone to create a QR code, but not only  can you create your own QR code but you can also customize it. Some QR codes have colors and/ or artsy designs which draw attention. With that being said, think about how PR professionals can use QR codes.

In many aspects of PR it is all about informing your publics. With QR codes, PR professionals can drive more attention to their employers’ sites. They can also use QR codes in campaigns to increase awareness, but more importantly one could also link press kit items to the QR code which would in turn allow the reporters to have an easier point of access to information they need. This helps in a couple of ways. First, the more easily you allow information to be attained the more likely people (reporters included) are to view something. Secondly, if done properly, QR codes can make viewing a needed part of one’s website easier for example, store hours. PR professionals can also go further and use them in press releases to ensure that reporters have all the information they need as well as allowing their publics a direct link to their website. Other uses of QR codes can range from placing them on business cards so that potential employers or clients can have a direct link to your portfolio; one might also think about placing them on their LinkedIn pages to maximize viewing potential.

Overall, QR codes are emerging in our technologically driven society because we are an “information now” generation. We Google our questions so we can find the fastest answers and move on. In this type of society the easier the information is to acquire, the more you can reach out to your audience.
